Constraints on the δH diffusion rate in firn from field measurements at Summit, Greenland

چکیده
We performed detailed H isotope diffusion measurements in the upper 3 m of firn at Summit, Greenland. Using a small snow gun, a thin snow layer was formed from H-enriched water over a 6× 6 m area. We followed the diffusion process, quantified as the increase of the δH diffusion length, over a 4-year period, by retrieving the layer once per year by drilling a firn core and slicing it into 1 cm layers and measuring the δH signal of these layers. We compared our experimental findings to calculations based on the model by Johnsen et al. (2000) and found substantial differences. The diffusion length in our experiments increased much less over the years than in the model. We discuss the possible causes for this discrepancy and conclude that several aspects of the diffusion process in firn are still poorly constrained, in particular the tortuosity.

Atmosphere-to-snow-to-firn transfer studies of HCHO at Summit, Greenland
Formaldehyde (HCHO) measurements in snow, firn, atmosphere, and air in the open pore space of the firn (firn air) at Summit, Greenland, in June 1996 show that the top snow layers are a HCHO source. HCHO concentrations in fresh snow are higher than those in equilibrium with atmospheric concentrations, resulting in HCHO degassing in the days to weeks following snowfall. Maximum HCHO concentration...
متن کاملReactive trace gases measured in the interstitial air of surface snow at Summit, Greenland
Concentration measurements of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrous acid (HONO), nitric acid (HNO3), formaldehyde (HCHO), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), formic acid (HCOOH) and acetic acid (CH3COOH) were performed in air filtered through the pore spaces of the surface snowpack (firn air) at Summit, Greenland, in summer 2000. In general, firn air concentrations of NO, NO2, HONO, HCHO, HC...

[1] In a yearlong investigation of the air-snow transfer function for nitrate (NO3 ) at the Greenland Environmental Observatory, Summit (3203 m above sea level), surface snow concentrations measured every other day were compared with levels measured in 10 snow pits dug adjacent to accumulation stakes. Concentrations in the surface snow ranged from 0.4 to 34 mM with a mean of 2.9 ± 1.9 mM. Measu...
متن کاملA 60 yr record of atmospheric carbon monoxide reconstructed from Greenland firn air
We present the first reconstruction of the Northern Hemisphere (NH) high latitude atmospheric carbon monoxide (CO) mole fraction from Greenland firn air. Firn air samples were collected at three deep ice core sites in Greenland (NGRIP in 2001, Summit in 2006 and NEEM in 2008). CO records from the three sites agree well with each other as well as with recent atmospheric measurements, indicating ...
متن کاملHydroxyl Radical in/on Illuminated Polar Snow: Formation Rates, Lifetimes, and Steady-State Concentrations
While hydroxyl radical (OH) in the snowpack is likely a dominant oxidant for organic species and bromide, little is known about the kinetics or steady-state concentrations of OH on/in snow 10 and ice. Here we measure the formation rate, lifetime, and concentration of OH for illuminated polar snow samples studied in the laboratory and in the field. Laboratory studies show that OH kinetics and st...
